A Quality Lapel Mic & Lens Can Give You the Visual and Sound You Want

Have you ever seen a shot where there is a close up of a person’s face while he or she is talking? As this person goes through his or her speech the frame slowly zooms out to reveal the person is alone and in the middle of an open field or on top of a building.  Ever wondered how this high quality sound was obtained without the use of a boom mic? Well, with the advances in sound recording equipment and great leaps in lens tech, this shot is becoming more and more available to the casual videographer.

What is needed to obtain this type of effect is a quality lapel mic that will broadcast a radio signal back to the camera. This will allow the camera to be virtually anywhere depending on the broadcast power of the mic. Some experimentation will be needed to figure out just how far the mic will be able to reach, while still producing a quality signal.

A lens will be needed that is able to obtain long shots, as well as zoom out and show a wide angle of view. These shots are known as “reveals,” because they only show a small portion of the action to the audience, then zoom out to reveal more of the scene. A tripod is highly recommended, because the further the camera is zoomed in, the more prone it is to be shaky during recording.
