Could YouTube Movies Challenge Netflix?

YouTube, the online video sharing giant and second largest search engine, has started its very own movie rental service.  On the surface, it seems as if YouTube is simply expanding its service to take advantage of their incredible number of viewers, which includes many DC area businesses and their locally produced video.

Since YouTube is owned by Google, who we all know is an ambitious company, the movie rental service could represent much more than a simple expansion of services.  By offering movie rentals, Google has challenged popular online video rental services like Netflix.  Could YouTube actually beat Netflix at their own game?

YouTube hasn't exactly hit the ground running with its rental service; they only offer 3,000 titles now, but will soon be adding an additional 3,000 films from Sony, Time Warner, Warner Brothers, Universal Pictures, and Lionsgate.  YouTube's Salar Kamangar has stated that "By expanding our content partnerships worldwide and stimulating the success of budding filmmakers, artists and entrepreneurs, we'll ensure that YouTube remains the best place for the world to see and discover rich talent".

With millions of users, YouTube is hoping that their followers will take a liking to their new service and continue to support them.  All YouTube rentals will be available for streaming only. Netflix offers content for streaming and DVD by mail.

Aside from movie rentals, YouTube already offers free full-length movies with ads.  There will be movie reviews and other extras available along with the rentals.  Users will have up to 30 days to begin viewing the movies they rent, but once the movie has started, it has to be viewed within 24 hours.

It'll be difficult for YouTube to seriously challenge a trusted name like Netflix, but with improved user interface and additional offerings, they may cause Netflix to break a sweat.  This will take time though. Netflix has already bested most of the competition like Blockbuster (and its online service).

With YouTube's continuing expansion and the sheer number of viewers they command, it makes sense to incorporate YouTube into any online marketing campaign.  If you'd like to find out more about creating Web videos, contact us at 877-477-STUDIO and be sure to order a copy of our free Video Marketing DVD today.
