How Do You Know if You Have Hired the Right DC Event Photographer?

Hiring the right photographer to cover your event can be tricky, and sometimes you may not know you hired a bad photographer until it is too late.  Good photography is essential to sharing the moments with the folks who were not there.

So how do you know if you are hiring the right photographer? 

There are a couple ways to go about selecting a photographer that will leave you confident in your choice.

First and foremost, always ask to review an event photographer's portfolio. Reviewing previous work is the absolute best way to ensure that a photographer has an eye for subject and content, and that he or she will be able to effectively capture the moments you have planned.  Any person can use simple viewfinders and press a button, but good photographers understand the deeper concepts at hand like composition, lighting, depth of field,  audience, tonality, and color fidelity.  These things will become apparent when reviewing a photographer's portfolio.

Do not hesitate to discuss the specifics of the event with your photographer before hiring them. 

This will give you insight into a photographer's professionalism, experience, and likeability.  Is the photographer friendly and engaging?  Will he or she be able to put their subjects at ease in front of the camera?  Has he or she covered events of your size and scale before?  Can the photographer anticipate your questions and concerns?  Make sure to discuss not only the photography itself, but the processing and turnaround time for your photos as well. If you will need photos that same day to post to your website, ensure your photographer has the technology to make that happen.
