How Video is Affecting Mobile Web Usage

It has been a few years since Nielsen first reported that Web video viewing is at an all-time high, and that mobile Internet video viewing had eclipsed desktop video viewing by almost an hour more per month. If there were any skeptics still around then, they have apparently ceased to exist today.

In fact, according to a recent Parks Associates report, smartphone ownership is forecasted to quadruple by 2015, with over 2 billion users expected to own smartphones.  That growth is being driven largely by dual-facing camera support, video chat and other application-enabled functions. Video viewing and editing apps are huge contributors to the smartphone boom.

That quadrupling estimate is just for the smartphones themselves.  In a recent Bloomberg article, Cisco Systems said that Internet traffic over mobile devices will increase 26-fold by 2015.  26-fold!  There isn't even a good word for that; people have to say "26-fold." With users surfing the Web more on their mobile devices and watching online video on YouTube and Hulu, connection speeds are expected to rise 10-fold by that time in order to keep up with demand.

In line with these reports, Google CEO Eric Schmidt's recent keynote address to the Internet Advertising Bureau's Annual Leadership meeting centered on the fact that mobile Internet growth is increasing at much higher rates than originally forecasted. Consumers can anticipate being provided with near-endless data, including product reviews, real-time news and competitor pricing, all at their fingertips.

According to video and market research firms and networking hardware manufacturers and software developers, mobile video is here to stay, and it will continue to drive innovation and consumption. Businesses big and small that do not adjust to the Web mobile video trend will do so at their own peril.
