Is YouTube the Most Social Site on the Net?
YouTube continues to grow exponentially, even while competing against popular search engines and social media sites. They celebrated their 6th anniversary this year, and recent statistics show just how much they've grown since their launch in 2005 as an amateur video sharing site. Local businesses, together with Virginia's video production firms, have long since realized the potential of YouTube as a marketing tool.
We all know YouTube is the most popular video uploading website, but is YouTube the most social site as well? A very compelling argument can be made with the latest statistics showing just how dominant YouTube has become. Take a look at some of the latest figures released by YouTube:
- More than 3 billion views per day worldwide.
- 13 million hours of video were uploaded in all of 2010.
- Videos were played 700 billions times in 2010.
- More than 10,000 "partners."
- 4 million people who use YouTube are simultaneously connected to and sharing with at least one social network.
The statistics show that YouTube attracts users of social media. Social media users gather at YouTube for many reasons: YouTube is the second largest search engine after Google, videos are free to host, and you can link videos to Facebook and Twitter. There's also a wealth of "how to" videos available, practically eliminating the need to search for instruction booklets on traditional search engines.
YouTube is very social in a way - it connects people with home videos, allowing them to have their own channel and also comment on other people's videos. However, unless YouTube releases a feature set more fitting of a social networking site, it will not directly compete with online services like Facebook.
