One reason that post-production is so vitally important is, as William Wallace so famously proclaimed, “Freedom”! It gives cameramen the ability to shoot all day long without worrying about the sequence of events. Gathering raw footage is the first step to a great video.
Editing has always been a huge part of
video production, but in the digital age, it has never been so heavily relied upon. We should thank our lucky stars that we no longer have to physically cut and paste film! We can shoot more video and edit quickly and efficiently, although the skills required to do so should never be underrated.
Here are a few things to think about when editing your film:
- Think of the story you are trying to tell as you edit. Order the sequence of events so that you grab your viewer’s attention at the beginning and satisfy them at the end. Insert text and music where appropriate, but focus mostly on the visuals and dialogue you have captured on film.
- Don’t get too fancy! Yes, there are a lot of neat little tricks in video editing software, but don’t get carried away. Digital editing opens up a number of possibilities, some of which are wonderful and some of which are a distraction. Simple is almost always better!
- Ideally, your video will be so seamlessly produced that no viewer will take the time to think about it. A well-done video will have their full attention from start to finish.
