Three Things You Need to Know about the Latest Facebook Update
Facebook has recently installed a major update to its service, which CEO Mark Zuckerburg claims will "transform" the media industry. You may already be aware of many of them, but here are 3 major changes that Facebook has undergone in the past few weeks:
- 1. Magazine-style profile: Many people enjoy keeping a scrapbook to document their events and accomplishments. Facebook has launched their Timeline profile, which documents the user's life like a scrapbook.
- 2. Twitter-style ticker: The newsfeed on Facebook has been redesigned to mimic Twitter. Now all of your friends' activities will be announced in one place, which allows you to follow them easily.
- 3. Greater media integration: From now on, Facebook users will be given the option to allow Spotify, Hulu, and Netflix to post updates about how they are using the service. For instance, if you are listening to a song on Spotify, Facebook would create a link to the song in the form of an update on your profile. This is implemented in order to increase the ease with which friends can effortlessly recommend what they are listening to or watching.
Reactions have been mixed. But, according to a recent Mashable survey, 72.2% of Facebook users are not happy with the changes. These results should be taken with a grain of salt, though; it is very common for Facebook users to be more upset that they need to relearn the new layout rather than actually disliking the new design.
So, what's the point? Facebook needs to stay competitive. They are obviously feeling the burn from competitors like Twitter, hence the updated newsfeed. The media integration is simply Facebook acknowledging the increasing presence of web video and music in social media.
