Google TV is Bringing Web Video into Your Living Room
Google is set to launch its most recent tech product, Google TV. Starting this fall, “smart TV’s” – that’s televisions with Internet access, like a smartphone - will be available from Sony with Google TV already built into them. If you aren’t in the market for a new TV, you can get a Google TV box, called the Revue, produced by Logitech.
So what exactly does Google TV do that is so special? The goal is a fusion of Internet and television. Web video is beginning to dominate the web. These same web users often have entertainment centers in their homes, complete with HD flat screens and surround sound. With all of the video content available on the web – everything from Netflix and Hulu to YouTube – it’s about time that someone brought it to television. Wouldn’t you rather watch all that video from the comfort of your couch?
Google is taking it a step further than just web video. They plan to offer apps, just like a smartphone, and a search bar that can hunt down video on the web or on regular television. The ability to choose when you watch a show rather building your schedule around that of the networks is already changing the way people watch TV. Until now, we’ve been catching last night’s episode of “Glee” on our computers. Now we will be able to watch it whenever we want, on our TV’s and still in HD.
