The Power of Video: Overnight Stardom for Homeless Man

Some business owners wonder if Web video is a truly effective medium for capturing the attention of the public. Most of us have shared in the dream of fame to some degree—even if only to be catapulted from obscurity and into the center of attention in our field.

An online video has done just that for Ted Williams. The Brooklyn, NY native was reunited this past Thursday with his mother and has received some amazing offers, including voiceover work for MSNBC.

This was all due to a clip capturing the “Golden Voice” which was shot on the side of the Columbus Ohio highway where he was begging for money. Having fallen upon hard times and becoming homeless after struggling with drugs and alcohol, Ted was “discovered” by Columbus Dispatch videographer Doral Chenoweth III, who shot the video.

The man who had been homeless for more than four years suddenly had a job offer, a place to live, and a free trip home to NYC to see his mother—all within twenty four hours of the video going viral on YouTube. Among other fantastic opportunities which poured in due to the viral video phenomenon, Williams also shot a commercial for Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and received a mortgage offer from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Sadly, the white hot lights of fame proved too much for Williams. As of January 13th, the overnight celebrity has apparently fallen off the wagon, and is headed for rehab yet again.

The feel-good story which literally took the nation by storm is a true testament to the power and speed of video in effectively spreading information and motivating responses. As we hope for Ted Williams recovery, we cannot help but wonder… who will be the next overnight superstar due to the power of video?
