What You Always Wanted to Know About HD Video and More!

Ten percent of videos uploaded to YouTube are in HD, making it one of the largest HD sites in the world.

You have heard the terms 720p and 1080p, but what do they mean and how do they affect the videos that you are watching? HD Video is defined simply as “any video system of higher resolution than standard-definition (SD) video, and most commonly involves display resolutions of 1,280×720 pixels (720p) or 1,920×1,080 pixels (1080i/1080p).” HD is sharper and more impressive than regular video and it is the way of the future.

Here is a breakdown of the important facts about HD video:

  • Horizontal x Vertical - The first number refers to the number of lines of horizontal pixels and the second number refers to the number of lines of vertical pixels. Multiple them for the total number of pixels. A 720p video has nearly one million pixels.
  • 1080i vs. 1080p - This refers to how the images are scanned. Progressive (or “p”) scanning refreshes the entire image for each frame. The resolution is the same regardless of whether or not the subject is in motion. Interlaced (or “i”) scanning refreshes odd numbered lines first then even numbered lines. Resolution is higher when the subject is still, but much less if the subject is moving. This is happening at least 30 times per second, faster than the human eye can see.
  • HD Video can be broadcast on live television, movies and even the Internet. 2k (3 million pixels) and 4k (12 million pixels) are part of the next wave of super HD video!
