Read All TestimonialsGoogle is popping up everywhere, from your personal computer to your smartphone. Soon Google may appear in your living room.
There have been reports that Google, Intel and Sony are collaborating together to develop a Web content platform called Google TV. According to rumors, this platform would come in the form of a set-top box or as part of a Web-capable television. Already, there are competitors in the set-top box market. These devices allow you to stream online video from YouTube, rent premium video content and surf the Web. However, none of these set-top boxes have been able to attract a big enough user base to be deemed the preferred living room device. So the question becomes – will Google’s platform be any different?
Google TV will be based on Google’s mobile operating system, Andriod, and would also include a version of its Web browser, Chrome. The New York Times has reported that Google TV will have the capability to use Web applications, such as Twitter or Picasa, Google’s online photo sharing and storage service.
The concept behind Google TV, according to the Times, is to produce smartphone-like applications that make using the Web on your television as simple as changing the channel. Google is hoping that third-party developers will be encouraged to create apps for Google TV, just like they did for the smartphone.
