YouTube Star Puts the “Real in Reality”, Gives Hope to Community
Posted on Feb 03, 2011
Hailed as putting the “real in reality” by the Washington Post, Antoine Dodson's infamous interview video quickly went viral—catapulting the resident of the Alabama Lincoln Park projects from poverty to overnight stardom.
The interview that inspired several remixes set to music, including what eventually became the most known version by The Gregory Brothers, known as the "Bed Intruder Song". The resulting auto-tuned ditty eventually reached number 89 on Billboard's “Hot 100 list” and inspired many spin-offs, including a punk rock version by a member of Paramore.
On August 26, 2010, NBC’s the Today Show interviewed Dodson about his newfound fame. Hosts called Dodson's YouTube video "one of the most watched online videos ever,"—stating that it had already been watched more than 16 million times when the show was being recorded.
The end result of the Dodson YouTube video? Life-Changing.
Dodson utilized his fame to launch a website aimed at donations in order to assist his family in moving out of the projects. The funds went towards helping his family buy a new home and setting up a foundation for juvenile diabetes.
Less than a year after his video went viral, Dodson gave a live performance of "Bed Intruder" at the 2010 BET Hip Hop Awards as well as several radio shows; he now has a world-wide fan base.
He and his family have come a very long way from the Lincoln Park projects—all thanks to one video.
